by Julia

Litterless Lunch Week is a week during our school year when we try to reduce the amount of garbage we use to pack our lunches. In fact, the goal is to bring no garbage at all, so that we reduce the amount of garbage our school produces each day.

So how did we do?  Thanks to the students and teachers at Roy H. Crosby, we have reduced the amount of garbage that we generate everyday from about 1¾ big garbage cans, to about ¾ of a single garbage can.  That’s a reduction of about 60%! Keep up the good work Roy H. Crosby

Not only should we bring litterless lunches during the Litterless Lunch Week, we should try to bring litterless lunches everyday, all the time.

Don’t be a litter bug! Litterless lunches may include bringing :

      reusable containers

      thermoses

      reusable drink bottles

      reusable cutlery

•      use only one napkin per meal, not a handful of 3 or 4 napkins

Avoid the use of:

      plastic wraps

      plastic cutlery

      disposable water bottles or cans

candy/chips wrappers (the food is bad for you anyways!)

Now, let's try to reduce the garbage even more!  Everyone can contribute to our goal of being a gold or even platinum Eco-school.  I bet we can do it!  Good job Roy H. Crosby!  Have a nice day!

TIPS FOR PACKING A LITTERLESS LUNCH

-  Buy in bulk. (avoid pre-packaged “convenience" foods)

-  Pack sandwiches, cut up fruits and vegetables, crackers, cookies, yogurt, cheese and other items in reusable containers.

-  Use a refillable juice container.  Juice boxes, pouches, or cans cannot be resealed and any excess is just thrown away.

-  If plastic baggies are used make sure they are re-used.  Avoid plastic wrap and aluminum foil.

-  Use everyday cutlery from home instead of buying plastic. If plastic is used make sure it is re-used.

-  Pack everything in a reusable lunch bag or box.  Children can then repack uneaten food perhaps to be had later instead of just tossing it into the school’s garbage

-  Remind your kids to use the Recycling boxes provided at the school for any recyclable items.
